#310146* (?/34) ⚐Flag <NWH> Heh. There's a lot of debate on the Net over whether Annie, the Popeyes spokeswoman, is a racist caricature. How much do you wanna bet most of the complaints are generated by liberal White folks who have never eaten there?
<Taryn> probably
<Taryn> I love Black women. Why do most people hate them?
<NWH> I know, right? There are a lot of people who are up in arms about *any* depiction of Black people in fiction, even neutral or positive ones. A few years ago when Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" came out, many people disagreed with Tiana's design and motives, even though she was a different, more modern, more hard-working and independent kind of Disney Princess.
<Taryn> yes. It's ridiculous.
<NWH> As for Annie's portrayal on the commercials, I don't see her as a Mammy stereotype like so many others do. She's supposed to be a person who works there and is enthusiastic about the product. Nothing wrong with that.
<Taryn> yes
<NWH> Nothing more, nothing less.
<Taryn> hell, I never see these "Mammies" all the White people hate.
<NWH> So she has a Louisiana accent. Big deal. People are saying it's wrong to have a Louisiana accent?
<Taryn> yeah, really. For a chain from Louisiana. |
